Previous Employment

Sound Mixer, BBC Arabic TV and BBC Persian TV, London

On a Freelance basis: July 2009 – Present

Transmitting 24/7, BBC Arabic TV broadcasts news and programmes in Arabic for audiences across the Middle-East and Africa, while its sister BBC Persian TV screens current affairs and entertainment for Farsi speakers in Afghanistan and Iran. I operate the sound mixer for these programmes, working with the Vision Mixer to test live feeds before putting them to air, mic-ing up the presenters and guests in the studio, and mixing the audio to form news bulletins, phone-in debates, programmes and popular UK programmes like Top Gear dubbed into the two languages.

Studio Manager, Africa & Middle-East, BBC World Service, London

Dec 2008 – July 2009

Then on a Freelance basis: July 2009 – Present

I am responsible for programme output in English and more than 30 other languages. I turn the production team's creative vision into technical reality. In the studio, I operate the mixing desk for live and pre-recorded programmes, ensuring the programme is of the highest quality. This involves taking level and adjusting EQ, playing out items from a computer playout system, connecting and checking circuits from around the world and keeping track of time. On-air, I make last-minute audio changes, ensure the studio is safe for all production staff to work in, and act as evacuation/fire co-ordinator. Off-air, I edit and mix audio and look after the Radioman playout database. The job also includes giving training to production staff for audio-visual equipment, attending duty trips for news and events across the world and booking studios.

Media Co-Ordinator, BBC News Traffic, BBC News, London

Sep 2007 – Dec 2008

Then on a Freelance basis: April 2009 - Present

At 'Traffic', I connect correspondents around the globe to the BBC's multimedia newsrooms, recorded dispatches and co-ordinate live two-ways. After carrying out technical checks on the quality of the line, I alert newsrooms of incoming dispatches via tannoy, and made digital recordings. For two-ways, the lines are offered to any of the BBC’s studios for use in programmes. A wide variety of circuits are used, including satellite phones, ISDN, VOIP or telephone lines, radio cars, bureaux lease lines and satellite trucks. During breaking news I am under intense pressure and sudden demand from TV and radio programmes.

Broadcast Assistant, BBC Three Counties Radio, Luton

Oct 2004 – Sep 2007

Working on a range of news, magazine and music programmes, I created running orders, scripted cues and edited audio based on the day's local news. In the studio, I oversaw live programmes, putting contributors and listeners on-air, looking after the presenters and dealing with any problems as they arose. I also drove the mixing desk for OBs and live sport commentary, including for Luton Carnival, the Rhythms Of The World music festival, and extended coverage of local breaking news.
